What is Coral Bleaching?<\/h3>\t\t\t
Warmer water temperatures can result in coral bleaching. When water is too warm, corals will expel the algae (zooxanthellae) living in their tissues causing the coral to turn completely white. This is called coral bleaching. When a coral bleaches, it is not dead. Corals can survive a bleaching event, but they are under more stress and are subject to mortality.<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>

Protect Coral Reefs<\/h3>\t\t\t
You can help protect coral reefs, too.\u00a0Climate change poses a fundamental threat to coral reefs.\u00a0Simple steps such as carpooling to work or using mass transit can help reduce your carbon footprint and protect these vibrant ecosystems.<\/h5>\n

Coral bleaching matters because once these corals die, reefs rarely come back. With few corals surviving, they struggle to reproduce, and entire reef ecosystems, on which people and wildlife depend, deteriorate.<\/p>\n

Bleaching also matters because it\u2019s not an isolated phenomenon. According to the\u00a0National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association,\u00a0between 2014 and 2017 around 75% of the world\u2019s tropical coral reefs experienced heat-stress severe enough to trigger bleaching. For 30% of the world\u2019s reefs, that heat-stress was enough to kill coral.<\/p>\n
